Author WordPress Theme

Getting Started

To get started with Author, you need to upload and activate the theme. You can add the theme via your WordPress dashboard by going to Themes → Add New → Upload. Upload

Alternatively, if you're a wizard you can also add the unzipped theme folder via FTP to the /wp-content/themes/ directory.

Recommended Plugins

Author uses a few plugins to provide functionality to the theme.

  • Okay Toolkit - The Okay Toolkit provides extended functionality to your theme. Author utilizes the custom galleries and extra widgets.

    1. To install, go to Plugins → Add New.
    2. Search for Okay Toolkit by Okay Themes and install it.
    3. Click the "Activate Plugin" link at the bottom of the install screen.
    4. Once activated, the features your theme supports will now be active. Extra widgets will now show up in Appearance -> Widgets. You don't have to change any settings for the Toolkit, although there is an FAQ page you can visit in Settings → Okay Toolkit.
  • Contact Form 7 - This plugin creates a fully functional contact form for your site. You can install it directly from your dashboard in the Plugins menu, or grab it from the plugin repository.

    1. Log in and navigate to Plugins → Add New.
    2. Search for Contact Form 7 and install it.
    3. Click the "Activate Plugin" link at the bottom of the install screen.
    4. There will now be a Contact menu item on the WordPress admin menu. See below for more instructions on using this plugin with the theme.

Author Options

Upon activating your theme, you should visit Appearance → Customize → Theme Options to setup the basic theme settings such as your logo, accent color and more. Detailed instructions and tips can be found below.

  • Add Your Logo
    The first option in the Theme Options menu will be Logo Upload. Click the Logo select box to select an image from your computer. One you've uploaded and selected an image, a thumbnail preview will display and your logo will update live in the browser.

  • Accent and Link Color
    You can change the blue accent/link color on the site to any color prefer. Simply click Select Color and use the color picker or color palette to choose a new color. You will see the color update on your site live in the preview window.

  • Homepage Excerpt Slider
    You can choose to enable or disable the homepage excerpt slider, which can be seen on the demo's homepage. This slider simply rotates titles and excerpts from sticky posts. More information on the slider below.

  • Custom CSS
    You can add custom CSS to this box and it will be applied to your site. This is meant for very minor CSS adjustments. If you plan on making extensive CSS modifications, you should do so in a child theme so you can still update your theme later on.

Homepage Excerpt Slider

The homepage excerpt slider takes posts marked as Sticky and displays them in a slider at the top of your homepage. This is good for showing off featured posts.

  • Enable the Slider
    Make sure you have the slider enabled in Appearance → Customize → Theme Options.

  • Make Posts Sticky
    To populate the slider with posts, you need to mark some posts as Sticky. On the post edit screen, you'll see the Publish box. Next to Visibility, click Edit. Under the Public option, you'll see the option to Stick this post to the front page. Check this box to make the post sticky. Any post you mark as sticky will show up in the homepage excerpt slider.

  • Edit Your Excerpt
    Control the amount of text that shows up in the excerpt by manually adding an excerpt in the Excerpt box. This is a good size excerpt, for example.

Author Menus

Author comes with 4 menu locations that you can utilize for menus.

  • Main Menu
    This is the main menu in the header of your theme. You can assign this to the header by checking the appropriate theme location under the menu.

  • Secondary Menu
    This is the secondary menu in the header of your theme. This can be used as a category menu, or whatever kind of menu you'd like. You can assign this menu by checking the appropriate theme location under the menu.

  • Footer Menu
    This is the footer menu in the footer of your theme. You can assign this menu by checking the appropriate theme location under the menu.

  • Custom Menu
    This is a custom menu, which can be used in a sidebar widget. Once you've created a custom menu, you can use the Custom Menu widget in Appearance → Widgets to display the menu.

Contact Page

The Contact Page uses the Contact Form 7 plugin, which can grab for free on the WordPress plugin repository. Once installed, you'll see there is a Contact link in the left hand sidebar of your WordPress admin.

  • If you haven't already, create a new page called Contact.

  • Go to the Contact menu on the left admin menu to configure your contact form. By default they give you a simple form with Name, Email, Subject and Message. To keep things simple, I suggest using the default form. Otherwise, to customize this form even further, check out the Contact Form 7 docs page here.

  • After you've configured and saved your contact form in the Contact menu, you will be given a small shortcode like this: [contact-form 1 "Contact form 1"]. Copy this shortcode. We'll use this to add the form to our Contact page.

  • Now head back to your Contact page. Paste the Contact 7 shortcode that you copied into the body of the post. Update the post. You should now see the form on the contact page.

Archive Page

Author comes with an Archive page template which displays all of your latest posts, pages and categories.

  • Create a page called Archives (or whatever title you'd like).

  • On the right hand side of the page, in the Page Attributes pane, select Custom Archive from the Template menu.

  • Once finished, publish your page and check out the archive.

Sidebar Widgets

Author supports widgets in the sidebar. You can drag and drop any widgets you'd like into the sidebar. If you would like to add Twitter, Flickr or Dribbble to this section, be sure you have the Okay Toolkit plugin installed. These widgets will be available on the Widgets page.

Footer Social Media Icons Widget

Author lets you add social media icons to the footer of your theme. Go to Appearance → Widgets, and drag the Okay Social Media Links widget to the Footer Icons window, and add the appropriate links.

Creating Media Posts


  • Create a new post and add a title and post content.

  • Next, scroll down the page a bit and look for the Custom Fields box. If you don't see the Custom Fields box, look up towards the top of your screen and click the Screen Options drop down. Make sure Custom Fields is checked..

  • Now you can add the Custom Field. The Name is going to be okvideo and the value will be your embed code. The embed code should look something like the following code. Click Add Custom Field. <iframe src=";byline=0&amp;portrait=0" frameborder="0" width="565" height="229"></iframe>

  • Once you've added the custom field, you need to be sure to add a category or any descriptive tags if you want.

  • Publish the post when you're finished.

Featured Image Posts

  • Create a new post and add a title and description.

  • Write your content and add whatever styling you want.

  • On the right hand side of your page, you'll see the Featured Image Pane. Click Set Featured Image and upload your image. Once uploaded, scroll down and click "Use as featured image". Once set, you can close the image upload window.

  • Publish the post when you're finished.

The slider gallery is activated when you install and activate the Okay Toolkit plugin. This lets you create a slider gallery to be displayed above your post. Be sure to read the setup below and also check out this quick video I made showing how it works. (Note that you won't have to change any plugin settings or activate features as you see in the video. Everything is now automated.)

  • Create a new post and add a title and description.

  • On the right hand side of your page, you'll see the Format pane. Click Gallery to set the post format and activate the gallery options.

  • Under your post editor, you'll see the Okay Gallery pane. (If you don't see the pane, click Screen Options (top right of screen) and check the Okay Gallery.) Click the Edit Gallery button. Once the Edit Featured Gallery dialog opens, upload the images you'd like in your gallery, or select them from images you've already uploaded with the Add to Gallery link. Once your images are selected, click Add to Gallery. When finished, you can arrange your images by selecting and dragging them into position. If the theme supports image captions, you can add one in the Edit Featured Gallery page.

  • Once you've added your images and content you can publish and preview your post.

Post Styles

Author comes with a few custom element styles, which are used to easily add extra styling to your WordPress posts.

To use the post styles, simply select your text and then select from the drop down which style you would like to apply. You'll be able to see the changes live, in your editor.

  • Highlight - This will highlight the hell out of some text.

  • Intro Title - As seen on the demo, this is a nicely styled block of text to introduce your post or page.

A Note About Author 3.0 Widgets

Author used to come with a few extra widgets bundled with the theme, such as a Social Count widget and a tabbed Recent Posts widget. These widgets have been retired in version 3.0 in favor of existing plugins that already provide this functionality. If you're upgrading to 3.0 and would like to keep similar widgets, you can check out plugins below.

  • Social Count Plus - This plugin will allow you to show social count numbers. Once installed, go to Settings → Social Count Plus to configure your social sites. When you are finished with the settings, you can go to Appearance → Widgets and add the Social Count widget to the sidebar.

  • SB Popular Posts Tabbed Widget - This plugin will add a tabbed Recent/Popular post interface to your sidebar. Once installed, go to Appearance → Widgets to add the widget to your sidebar. No configuration is necessary for this widget.
